To convert for ground operation, the two wings were separately detached by first removing the pins from the lower wing strut attach points and then swinging the struts outboard to be used as a stand. The wheel brakes, ground accelerator pedal and a foot button starter switch were the only controls on the floor. This same wheel was also used to turn the nose wheel for steering during ground operation. The only device used for flight control was a wheel yoke that was suspended from the cabin ceiling in front of the pilot. The only expensive aircraft quality instruments used were the magnetic compass, air speed indicator, and altimeter. Waterman used as many standard auto components as possible, including Studebaker radiator, interior knobs and parts, hood grill, starter, generator, battery, and engine, Ford radiator grill and gear reduction assembly, Austin steering wheel, and Willys headlight, internal differential gears, and wheel brakes. The aircraft was required to meet the certification criteria for both the Bureau of Air Commerce and the state motor vehicle departments. This idea required the development of a transmission drive system that would operate the propeller for flight and the rear wheels for ground operation. The Bureau of Air Commerce's recognition of the Arrowplane prompted Waterman to form the Waterman Arrowplane Corporation in Santa Monica, California, and develop a roadable version of the aircraft known as the Arrowbile. While the Arrowplane was not roadable, it was a major advance toward achieving Waterman's ultimate goal of a roadable airplane. Automobile style doors allowed entry into the side-by-side passenger cabin. The airplane was powered by a four-cylinder, 95 HP Menasco C-4 air-cooled inline engine mounted in a pusher configuration in the rear of the passenger/crew nacelle. Pitch was controlled by the fore and aft movement of the control column and a turn of the control wheel resulted in a perfectly coordinated banked turn. This essentially made the airplane stall and spin-proof. To fulfill Vidal's easy-to-fly requirements, a two control. Outboard deflection of the rudders provided a speed brake function. Flight control was provided by wing mounted elevons and wing tip mounted multi function rudders. The resulting prototype "Arrowplane" was a much more stable two-place, high-wing tailless cabin monoplane equipped with a tricycle landing gear. Waterman sought to adapt the "Whatsit" design to meet those requirements. In response to the safe airplane competition, Mr. The "Whatsit," also in the Museum's collection, was the test bed that led to the Arrowplane, In 1932, Waterman designed and test flew a Kinner-powered tailless low-wing pusher that was nicknamed "Whatsit" by bystanders who were puzzled by the strange configuration of the airplane. In 1911, pioneer aviator Glenn Curtiss commented to Waldo Waterman of Santa Monica, California, about how nice it would be to drive his amphibian aircraft away from the landing field or water and thus inspired Waterman to begin work on tailless roadable airplane. Bureau of Air Commerce Chief Eugene Vidal's initiative AB-205 for "everyman's safe, low-cost, airplane." The target price of $700 for a flivver aircraft was widely ridiculed as too low, even at depression prices, because of practical engine and manufacturing costs, but Vidal found significant general interest in the concept. The Arrowplane was initially designed in response to U. The Waterman Aerobile #6 is the improved version of the design. In 1934, the Bureau of Air Commerce recognized the Waterman Arrowplane as one of two award-winning designs for its light, easy-to-fly, affordable aircraft competition. It received FAA certification in the experimental category in 1957, but no market materialized. Painted in "Buick blue," it had many standard Studebaker, Ford, Austin, and Willys automobile parts to keep the price down and maintain the look of a car. The one-piece wing was removed by moving a lever and pins. The Aerobile was a two-place, high-wing, cabin monoplane with a transmission drive system that operated the propeller in the air and the rear wheels on the ground. Waldo Waterman's improved Arrowplane, the Aerobile #6, fulfilled his dream of designing a tailless roadable airplane. In 1934, the Bureau of Air Commerce recognized the Waterman Arrowplane as one of the two award-winning designs for its flivver (i.e., light, easy-to-fly and affordable) aircraft competition. We’ll assume that neither the NSA nor criminals are really interested in your collection of cat photos or your daughter’s term papers. Which files should be encrypted and where? (And you must ensure that unprotected bits of those files don’t remain on your hard drive.) You also need to protect the encryption key with a long, complex password that’s extremely difficult to crack - and be wary of phishing scams and other deceits that might trick you into handing over the key. Going back to that house analogy, encrypting sensitive files is like locking your front door - a reasonable and generally sufficient line of defense. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take precautions. But it reserves the hard work for the few people of interest. It might soak up everyone’s cellphone metadata because that’s relatively easy. Even the NSA, which has the ability to crack all but the best encryption, probably won’t bother. It takes a lot of time and skill to crack encryption, and most criminals are looking for an easy score. To a large extent, the same rules apply to data. Few of us have anything in our homes that would attract the sort of professional thieves who might steal a Van Gogh. Why? Well, for one thing, you can’t afford it. But your security system most likely doesn’t match those used by New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Getty Center in Los Angeles. You might have an alarm system or even bars on the windows. You probably keep your front door locked - at least at night and when you’re away. I will recommend two file-encryption programs that might take TrueCrypt’s place. In this follow-up article, I’ll discuss my own approach to protecting sensitive files, and I’ll explain why I - unlike Susan - typically don’t recommend Microsoft’s BitLocker. It had dubious legal foundations, its developers were unknown, and its support was primarily relegated to forums that are now missing.” In last week’s (June 12) Top Story, “The life and untimely demise of TrueCrypt,” Susan Bradley reviewed the application’s history and stated, “It’s a mystery that we gave TrueCrypt such an extraordinary level of trust. So did I.īut now that the popular disk-encryption app is effectively dead - at least for the foreseeable future - it’s time to look for a replacement. It seems as if everyone who kept sensitive files secure did it with TrueCrypt. But VeraCrypt is the future, so if you’re setting up a new encrypted volume, it’s probably the way to go.TOP STORY Data-encryption alternatives to TrueCrypt If you’re using an old version of TrueCrypt, it isn’t incredibly urgent that you switch-it’s still pretty solid. VeraCrypt has fixed some of the minor problems brought up in TrueCrypt’s code audit, not to mention audits of its own code. It’s improvements to TrueCrypt’s base have set the stage for it to be a real successor, and while it’s a bit slower than TrueCrypt, but plenty of security experts like Steve Gibson say it’s a good time to make the jump. Technically, you can still use older versions of TrueCrypt if you like, and you can even follow along with this very guide, since TrueCrypt and VeraCrypt are nearly identical in interface. RELATED: 3 Alternatives to the Now-Defunct TrueCrypt for Your Encryption Needs VeraCrypt is ideal for creating encrypted volumes for groups of files, rather than encrypting your entire boot drive. VeraCrypt can encrypt your entire drive too, at least on some PCs, but we generally recommend Windows’ built-in Bitlocker for this purpose instead. VeraCrypt takes care of everything, keeping the files temporarily in the RAM, sweeping up after itself, and ensuring your files remain uncompromised. When you’re done working with them, you can just unmount the volume. All the files within the container are encrypted, and you can mount it as a normal drive with VeraCrypt to view and edit the files. With VeraCrypt’s on-the-fly system, you can create an encrypted container (or even an entirely encrypted system drive). RELATED: How to Set Up BitLocker Encryption on Windows TrueCrypt is now discontinued, but the project has been continued by a new team under a new name: VeraCrypt. On July 16, lumber was $481.90 per 1,000 board feet. In the three-week period ending July 2, prices climbed by roughly 28%. Lumber futures gained 56.5% in the second quarter, following a loss of more than 31% in the first quarter. This led to an increase in lumber prices of nearly 60% in the second quarter. The other was that folks stuck at home during quarantine were tackling home projects they had long avoided. One was a quick decline in lumber production on the part of sawmills. says there are a couple of reasons for this high demand. As people pretty quickly realized, there was no real need for construction to shut down, and building activity resumed, but inventories were already low and demand was high. That left lumberyards with wood they couldn’t sell. That was because at first, there was no construction going on-businesses everywhere, including the residential construction sector, had ground to a complete halt. The NAHB indicated that when the coronavirus pandemic began, lumber prices slumped. “When you consider downsizing your heating and cooling system which you can do with ICF, that gives you energy savings, and masonry structures typically get a break on insurance in our area, so that adds up to be about the same.” “Building with ICFs in our area typically costs $3 to $4 more per square foot than a lumber home, so if the price of lumber goes up $5000 then that means ICF is only $1000 to $3000 more,” Ballew says. ICF Warehouse is the largest ICF distributor in New Mexico. John Ballew, president of ICF Warehouse in Santa Fe, New Mexico, says he’s been selling ICF for 20 years and in the concrete industry for 40 years, and he saw the price of lumber starting to go up even before the press releases started hitting people’s mailboxes. Building with ICFs could cure both of those headaches for homebuyers. if lumber is more expensive and harder to get, that increases the cost of a stick-built home by thousands of dollars, and it potentially makes the build take a lot longer. But with this press release, it became clear that not only has lumber gotten more expensive, it’s gotten harder to find.Īll of this means ICF homebuilders have yet another tool at their disposal for selling ICF homes to potential homebuyers. They just had a general sense of how the market was changing. Contractors had mentioned that lumber prices were going up, at least since the beginning of the pandemic issues, but before this press release came out, none of the ones I talked with could provide hard data. Today, in late November, that’s down to about 120%. At that time, lumber prices had skyrocketed 160% since April. In July 2020, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) sent out a press release that spoke about how much more expensive lumber has gotten since the beginning of the year. The edges are not even, the icing is not smooth, everyone has bubbles in the icing and looks rough to touch, the tassels on the caps looks like hands, I mean I could go on and on but looking at the photos I have attached I think that says it all. I ordered 24 and every cookie looks like a child has decorated them. Had I known this is what they would look like I would have never ordered them. The cookies which I paid $3 each for are quite pitiful. I also ordered two dozen custom order graduation sugar cookies too. The girl who took my order had noted all of this and also noted that I wanted strawberries and the chocolate shavings on top as well. My name is Melissa Shrewsbury, I ordered a custom cake it was to be the exact same as a White Chocolate Strawberry cake except for having brown chocolate icing and a chocolate cake. My order was picked up by my daughter on Monday December 12th, 2022. I am sending this email in response to a custom order I had placed with y’all. The email I sent to 2 contacts there and to whixh I never got a response terrible customer service. The icing had bubbles in everyone the edges were uneven the cookies were thin and the cake was un even like the top was slanted. I wanted everything to be perfect and was embarrassed to give the cookies out, I let everyone know where I got them made sure they knew I didn’t do them. I will never go there again and an so thankful this was not for my daughters wedding but only her graduation which is still a big milestone. Anyways my whole point is that when you walk in to the bakery everything looks good but when you finally place a custom order it’s half *** done and also some of the cake slices in the glass case are stale. My daughter picked the order up for me and upon getting it the coke box had poked through to the bare cake and smeared the icing, the cake was suppose to have strawberries on it and chocolate shavings it has neither my daughter asked if they would fix the cake and put it in a different box and to add the strawberries and shavings which they only did the strawberries and the worker got rude with her for asking. I am attaching a copy of the email which explains everything and also some pictures of what the cookies looked like for $3 each $72.00 total for the cookies. I never received a reply at all, no apology, no nothing. contacted the bakery through email to let them know how disappointed I was and that if I had known the cookies would look like they did I would never have planned an order ordered. I paid $3.00 each per cookie that looked like a kid decorated and made them. I had ordered two dozen custom graduation cookies and a custom order cake 2 1/2 weeks in advanced to be picked up on 12/13/22. Note if you order a bagel instead of toast, you have to order and pay extra for cream cheese. Coffee is self-serve, and only creamer pods are available, Bakery section is separate with separate ordering section. Process - stand in line, order and pay, grab your table marker, they serve you at the table. But the food was great and priced well and the portions worked well for us (we prefer smaller portions, hate food waste, and were travelling through so did not want to carry left overs)įrom what I hear - there is always a long line, but we waited in line for about 10 minutes before ordering (best to look at menu ahead of time), and in the mean time one of us grabbed an empty table when it was available. The Waffle especially was a small single waffle, which was surprising and could probably have been two waffles for a. So portion size is closer to what portion sizes should be. The food was fresh, delicious, and did not feel like big, greasy diner food.
